When the Pictou Harbour Environmental
Protection Project wanted to increase
community awareness about the River John
watershed, the group contacted Tehlsee
Communications.
That’s because one of the company’s strengths
is rural communication, and most of the
watershed is populated by only 525 families,
spread out over much of western Pictou
County, NS.
The approach was to start by involving
teachers and students at the local school, who
were asked to create projects on the watershed.
A scavenger hunt for natural and man-made
items found along the river shoreline was
also organized.
At the same time, research began on a
PowerPoint presentation, which included
digital photography of the river and students
working on their projects and diagrams on how
the watershed was formed. The presentation
was later made to students at a school assembly
and during an evening community meeting.
Community members worked in small groups to determine group priorities for the watershed. Then they worked together to determine community priorities.
“Tehlsee Communications did an excellent job of
increasing awareness of the watershed, presenting
material in a way that was easy to understand, and
involving students and other community members.”
